Bettering Win32
A set of utilities to install with each new Windows machine. All of these are free and most are open-source.
- Firefox.
- Cygwin. GNU + Cygnus + Windows = CygWin.
- Process Explorer. A better process manager. Once installed, select "Options"->"Replace Task Manager" to make it the default process viewer.
- Who Lock Me?. An explorer extension that tells which process owns locks on the given file.
- MikTeX. A TeX implementation for Windows. Install before TeXnicCenter. Choose "net installer" for a complete installation.
- TeXnicCenter. A GUI for editing TeX documents.
- Media Player Classic. A better, less annoying media player.
- Python Interpreter. Install before WinCVS for macros. Install generally includes TCL/TK.
- WinCVS. Win32 utility for CVS. May prefer tortoiseCVS, but I find it to slow Explorer down a bit due to icon management.
- TortoiseSVN (Win32 Binaries). Shell extension for Subversion. Perhaps a stand-alone application (like RapidSVN) would be better, but I haven't found anything better than TortoiseSVN for Subversion.
